The Hotel was originally built in 1903 and is an architectural marvel and brings together Moorish, Oriental and Florentine styles, it brings together two distinct buildings the Palace and Tower which were built at different stages and in different architectural designs. The Hotel has played host to a long list of notable guests including The Beatles, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Bill Clinton, Joan Collins, Mick Jagger and the King and Queen of Norway. The Taj is a red brick, Victorian era, East –meets-west architectural triumph, it is divided into two wings the original Heritage wing and the 33 year old modernist Tower Wing. The Heritage wing is accessed via a tiny entry, and fans out like an elongated, elegant cross, capped by endless Moghul styled arches and a monumental neo-Florentine dome.

The interior offers beautifully vaulted alabaster ceilings, onyx Colums, graceful archways, hand woven silk carpets, crystal chandeliers, a celebrated art collection, and a fine collection of antique furniture. There are two distinct types of accommodations offered by this hotel the Tower rooms are aimed towards the business guest and the Heritage wing rooms are for those seeking indulgent luxury and an appreciation of fine art and antiques. There are a grand total of 565 rooms, the Taj Mahal Tower offers 268 rooms, including 9 suites and was conceived by American Architect Melton Bekker in 1973.

These rooms offer a refreshing mix of European style and Indian exoticism, the room categories offered here are: The Superior Rooms, Deluxe rooms, Taj club rooms, Executive suites and Luxury Suites. At the top of the range the Luxury suites provide wonderfully spacious interiors providing lounge and master bedrooms that flow onto balconies overlooking the sea, these suites include all of the privileges afforded the Club rooms such as airport transfer, exclusive check in and a welcome drink on arrival. Guests have complimentary use of the gymnasium, steam and Jacuzzi; the suites are furnished with complimentary bottle of imported wine, chocolates, fresh flowers, a fruit basket and a choice of newspapers and magazines.
The Heritage wing is traversed through wide corridors dressed with genuine artefacts and antiques, the rooms provide views either over the city and pool or face the Gateway to India and the Arabian Sea. Check in is a very genteel affair where guests are seated and provided with welcome drinks as bags are whisked away to the exclusive accommodations. The room categories provided in this wing are Luxury Grande Rooms, Taj club Rooms, Suites, Executive Suites, Luxury Suites, Grand Luxury Suites and the Presidential Suites.
These rooms exude an aura of old world charm and elegance being host to fine pieces of art and collectors antiques, the ceilings are high and intricately detailed dripping with crystal chandeliers, gilt edged mirrors line the walls offering reflections of the magnificently privileged views. The Presidential suites have been home to many Heads of State, celebrities and CEO's, they feature a grand living room, a private patio with port harbour and city views, master bedroom and a private balcony overlooking the Gateway of India.
The en suite bathrooms are Italian marbled offering retro style bathtubs with hydro massage hand showers as well as separate cubicles with overhead Rain showerheads, a vestibule and a dressing area. Other amenities include 2 line speaker phones with international direct dial facility, wireless internet access, 42" Plasma TV, surround sound, tea and coffee maker, mini bar and built in safe.
Business guests are well accommodated in their executive club rooms, with many sophisticated facilities or alternatively may use the business center attached to five conference rooms, offering PC workstations, multimedia computers, laptops, portable printers and cell phones, colour copying and secretarial and translation services.
